How to Wear Luxury Lingerie As Outerwear This Autumn
by Imogen Croft
Incorporating luxury lingerie as outerwear into your everyday wardrobe has been a huge trend this year, and it's one set to continue into autumn and winter. While warm weather and the general blurred lines associated with summer dress might've made this look easier to pull off so far, taking it in to autumn and winter can prove to be a challenge. To put it bluntly, using actual underwear as outerwear is not just a sartorial rule but a necessity once the temperature drops.
So, how to keep the sexy lingerie look alive, even when it's cold outside? Wear items that reference classic luxury lingerie styles - like corseting, lace and sheer fabrics - without exposing the underwear itself. This way you get the required amount of skin coverage while still keeping on trend. With all these looks, layering is key, so use the guide below as a base for building your winter outfits from the bottom up - if you're going outside, you'll need a scarf and a coat to accessorise all of these!
Body-Con Dressing
Pick up form-fitting tops and dresses with incorporated stencil-like overlays that mimic the lines of structured corsets. These lingerie-referencing items create a slimmed-down, sexy silhouette while emphasising curves - the effect you'd want from actual underwear, without going out in the street wearing it. Bonus.
Sheer Fabrics
Sheer fabric is a classic staple of luxury lingerie. Use it in an everyday look to layer sheer t-shirts and dresses over solid-colour vests or slips - you create the illusion of flashing flesh without actually putting much on show. Lace is the ultimate sheer fabric that's also used extensively in underwear items. Wear lace-panelled dresses, bodies and lace tights to incorporate the material's sexy-yet-prim stylings into your wardrobe.
Nude Colours
Flesh-coloured tops and dresses reference nudity through clothing. The closer-fitting the item, the more suggestive the look - think about the difference between Shakira's flesh-tone leotard in the She Wolf video and Betty Draper's beige cape in Mad Men, and you see how much difference a couple more inches of fabric make with this colour.
Lingerie-inspired Shoes, Bags, Hosiery and Jewellery
Nude-coloured heels with sheer black fabric overlay, lace or satin clutch bags and feathered cuffs and hairbands all draw inspiration from boudoir dressing. You can also pick up tights with sheer top halves and opaque stockings-and-suspenders stencil bottom halves - a great way to reference stockings while keeping the cold out!
